Scott has built a reputation as a gifted university teacher at the expense of his domestic life. To the consternation of his mother, girlfriends quickly lose interest in him. This all changes when a university colleague Jess becomes infatuated with him. Scott is attracted to her, but he nevertheless departs to the University of North Carolina for a one-year secondment. Almost immediately, he embarks on a relationship with Ellie, an American fellow History lecturer. Life becomes complicated when he discovers that Ellie is pregnant with his child.
Unlike Scott’s steadily upward career path, his domestic life is chaotic. Gradually he learns to make decisions and take responsibility for his actions but nothing is straightforward.
This is the story of a young man trying to make sense of his complicated personal life as he builds an academic career in London and the United States.
